About
Do the Write Thing Inc. (DtWT Inc.) is a not-for-profit Texas Corporation;
501 (c) (3) tax exempt organization.
DtWT Inc. is dedicated to building and maintaining a more robust civil society. It is multi-dimensional in its approach to preserving the principles and fulfilling the promises of our Nation’s Founders.
A primary initiative is the Texas Do the Write Thing Challenge, which is a youth anti-violence program. The Challenge is a writing project for middle-school students that helps equip them with the relational tools necessary to build healthy, productive lives and become civic-minded citizens. It involves schools, parents and communities in coordinated and collaborative outgrowth and outreach efforts. There are nine Challenge sites in major metropolitan areas of Texas.
The Challenge is an educational program designed to reduce and prevent violence and other anti-social and risky behavior in the uniquely vulnerable age group, 7th and 8th graders. The Challenge lesson plan fits seamlessly into local school curricula and it meets state objectives in various academic classes and enhances Safe and Drug Free Schools activities.
Discussing and responding in writing to the Challenge cultivates logical thought, creativity and literacy. Reflection upon the causes and effects of violence inculcates personal responsibility, teaches self-restraint and fosters empathy.
These students are in transition from elementary school to high school and it is a time of life-altering thinking and decision-making, for good or ill. The Challenge is an intervention program that helps young people develop a positive internal navigation system to guide them as they travel the pathway of life.
The Chair of DtWT Inc. is the Honorable Robert A. Eckels. Funding is provided by individuals, foundations, government agencies and the gifts of time and talent by hundreds of volunteers.
